Senior Rugby Update from the weekend

A busy weekend for the club this weekend with the 1XV entertaining league leaders Thornton Cleveleys, 2XV hosting a friendly fixture against Moore 2XV and the ladies travelling to Winnington Park today.

A gutsy defensive display for the majority of the game, and a superb second half saw the 1XV run out 40-12 winners against a very talented travelling TC who, through 20 minutes of switching off, probably flattered our lads. However three wins in as many weeks against three of the leagues heavyweights sets the Gingerbread men in good stead

Assistant Coach Steven Ekuor had a few words to say on the performance

"Fast becoming an unwelcome trait of our lads is the slow start and was again the story this weekend. Failure to retain and hold on to the ball when in possession resulted in unnecessary pressure from TC early doors.

However, our defence is quickly making us one of the most feared teams in the league and that really showed yesterday. We have this ruthless streak about us where we can suck the life out of teams and withstand everything they have to throw at us before we even come into the game - and finally after two years with James Smith we love defence!

We are on the cusp of becoming a really quality side and if we build from now to Christmas I really fancy our chances of promotion.

But we need to train, stay focused and not slip up. Easier said than done! I think we have another 30-40% as a squad to give and I cannot wait till we get to a stage where we're firing on all cylinders!"

New signing Jake Hodson picked up the Fitton Estates 1XV man of the match for an outstanding attacking display - three tries and aggression throughout. A real shame he's so bald!

Speaking of traits, we move to the 2XV who's unwelcome feature this season has been narrowly losing games as they ran out losers to a really solid attacking minded Moore 2XV. 36-33 to the visitors.

Gareth Dowling added this

"A great day at our club yesterday. Four teams playing at Green Lane, everyone sticking round for drinks to the late hours and live music. A real sense around the club that we are getting back to our former selves. A warm family feeling everywhere!

On the pitch yesterday we were excellent. Attacking at every chance we got, attacking so much we often forgot about defending! Joking aside the game was played in great spirits and it was amazing to see some of the older lads back around the club and getting stuck in!"

Prop duo of Terry McDermott and Ray Alan shared the spoils for the Mahood Marquees - Marquee Hire 2XV man the match for their outstanding scrummaging. (Helps when you've got over 70 years experience in the front row I guess!?!)

And finally our ever growing Ladies XV who travelled a little light on their feet to Winnington Park today. Forever a positive trait in the Ladies team is the willingness to travel and play games at all costs no matter which adversity stands in their way!

Leading for almost 60 minutes of the game, the ladies unfortunately ran out of gas and the match ended flattering Winnington at 32-14 to the hosts

Head Ladies Coach Andrew Evans added this

"Again I thought we were class today and really showed a lot of heart. A host of old faces came back to pitch in today and it was really pleasing to see. Our new faces had lots of experienced players to learn off and hopefully we can keep it up!

Fitness a telling tale in the end but if that's all we have to work on then i'm a happy coach. Excited to get back to training Tuesday!"

Special mentions go to Sarah Johnson playing her first game at front row and Rachael Smith on he debut well done to you both.

The Skelmersdale Electrical Distributors Ltd Ladies Player of the match was awarded to Anna O'Malley. Forever a thorn in the side of the opposition both in attack and defence, she was everywhere once again leading from the front

The senior section would like to thank sponsors Fitton Estates, Livewire Mechanical And Electrical Services Limited, Your Protection Ltd, Mahood Marquees - Marquee Hire, Skelmersdale Electrical Distributors Ltd, CAL International and Pioneer Windows

Next week the 1XV have a well deserved rest week, the 2XV make the trip across the water to play the unpredictable Hoylake 2XV and the Ladies host Garstang at Green Lane on Sunday.

Please get down and support the club
